farmOrganic farming or organic gardening is fast gaining popularity as more and more people are saying goodbye to synthetic products that include growth hormones, inorganic fertilizers, pesticides, and any organisms whose genetic composition had been modified. In other words, more and more people are now greatly concerned about their surroundings or about the environment, especially when it comes to how it relates with the things they put into their bodies and with how these things affect their health.

An organic approach to farming or gardening recognizes the complete environment in which plants grow. It is based on the principle that all living things everywhere are interrelated and are interdependent. Generally, organic farmers or gardeners establish a certain production system that works with Mother Nature, instead of one that dominates her. For example, organic farmers or gardeners try to maximize the natural nutrient cycles that ape or mimic those that are found in natural ecosystems. Organic farmers or gardeners also try to exploit natural mechanisms for pest control.

Here are specific reasons why more and more farmers and gardeners are growing plants and crops organically:

1. Organic farming or gardening inspires bio diversity as well as promotes a healthy environment. Huge areas of land are needed and used in mono-cropping, which method facilitates the use of huge machinery for spraying, harvesting and cultivating. This causes fewer varieties of crops being grown, thus resulting in reduced gene pool. With organic farming, on the other hand, farmers promote open-pollinated seeds, thus ensuring the maintenance of older plant varieties and a greater genetic base.

2. Through organic farming, you have fresh produce that is not only mouthwatering, but also free from any kind of contamination. You can therefore, be 100% sure that no amount of chemicals and other toxic substances get to be a part of your family’s diet and enter your systems. You can be sure that what you are eating is healthy and all-natural.

3. Organic farming helps reduce waste. You can make compost from your kitchen and garden waste, thus you also get to help save the environment. Utilizing organic compost is a great alternative to using commercially prepared chemical fertilizers and pesticides in keeping your plants and crops healthy.

4. By avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides, you get to guard as well as augment the living organisms present in the soil. These organisms, in turn, will aid in growing and producing healthier plants that are less susceptible to plant diseases and pests.

5. Organic gardens or farms actually make a very safe and pleasing environment where you can work and play. Especially for children. Chemical sprays and pesticides can damage the little ones, who are more likely to get in contact with and eat things right in the middle of playing and staying outdoors.

Take note that on the average, one child gets to ingest about four or five times more cancer-causing pesticides from edibles than an adult would. It may sound trivial, but this can actually lead to various diseases later in a kid’s life. Organic gardening lessens these incidents.

6. Organic farming or gardening causes less harm to the environment. Poisons or toxic substances carried in chemical pesticides and fertilizers often get washed into waterways, thus causing death to native fish and other marine creatures and causing pollution in their natural habitat.

7. Organic farming and gardening practices and methods help improve the health of the soil and therefore, prevent erosion that causes the loss of topsoil.

8. Cost savings. With organic farming, you would no longer need to buy expensive chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Just as previously mentioned, most organic recipes that aid the control of plant diseases and pests can come straight from the kitchen wastebasket or the kitchen cupboard.

With this list of benefits, it is no wonder why organic farming or gardening methods have risen to become the more preferred way of growing crops. People are aware of the abuses being done to nature and have seen the increasing number of diseases that attack our body systems, among many other negative after-effects of these abuses. Thus, we constantly strive to look for ways to be healthier while taking better care of nature.
